Shin Splints is a general term for a condition caused by inflammation of the anterior and posterior muscles and tendons in the lower leg and/or the adjacent soft tissue along the tibia (shin bone). The Tibialis Anterior muscle and tendon have to work harder to reduce the stress of running on hard surfaces and can become separated from the shin bone, causing pain and inflammation. Anterior shin splints are the most common among these groups - you can test by standing on your heels and trying to lift your toes off the ground, because the pain should become more intense. Over pronation increases the stress on the TA muscle and tendon when trying to absorb the excessive impact.
Symptoms are pain in the front part of the lower leg, ranging from a dull ache to sharp and stabbing pain that generally develops during exercise (the pain can be most intense when warmed down after exercise). This is a very common complaint for runners and other athletes where hard surfaces and rapid direction changes are common.
